Stella is on a fishing trip with her best friend, Jill and her family right before she starts her freshman year in college. They are violently woken in the middle of the night by a storm.and when the boat capsizes they are all seemingly sucked through an undercurrent. One by one, they all resurface in an underground cavern. Stella, along with Jill’s older brother, Colin learn that they are not alone and there doesn’t seem to be a way out. Taken in by other surviors, which they find out have been there for decades and seemingly established a way of life, then learn all is not what it seems. After tragedy strikes Jill’s family, escaping is the only option. Working with two other survivors and working against the “leaders” and other inhabitants of the caravan, Stella and Colin set a plan in motion for freedom with hopes to return and rescue the others.

I am not going to lie, Beneath is not generally they type of material that I read. YA is not my go to reading. With that being said, I was intrigued with the story. I didn’t love the book, but I liked it. There is a little romance between Stella and Colin which I found sweet and endearing, but lacking. Another romance blooms between Jill and a survivor, Daniel, which I found flat. I am hoping in the sequel, the relationships will evolve and backstories will be told. This is a visual book and has indeed solidify my desire not to go spelunking anytime soon. 🙂
