Yeah yeah, I know-this is mainly a romance book blog. But since it’s part mine, I am going to hijack it to tell you why you need to watch this show!! Unless you already are, then you need to go out and spread the word too! And since romance is involved, it’s not entirely out of the focus of the blog!
I will admit when I saw the first episode, I was a little hesitant. It was good if a little bit hokey but I saw enough that I definitely wanted to try it again. (Unlike SEAL Team…I could not make it more than 15 minutes in to the first ep. And you know me, SEALs are my catnip!) But then episode 2 with Abraham Lincoln….THAT was when I knew this was my show! Great characters and dialogue, and I immediately started shipping Lucy and Robert Todd Lincoln, lol!
Oh, you don’t know that term? Okay… Shipping is the fandom term when you want characters to ‘get together’ in a relationship. I am a LONG time shipper, in fact here’s a short list so you can see just how long this has been a thing for me!
*Bobby and Jess – True Blue (1989)
*Jonathan and Jennifer – Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future’ (1987)
*Janeway and Chakotay – Star Trek Voyager (1995)
I’ve either just proven how old I really am, or that I’m a loser or both…but I digress! (Though to prove how old I am, I remember the actor who plays Lucy’s dad on ‘Timeless’ from ‘Macgruder and Loud’ in 1985! See, I brought it back to the real topic!)
Now, I knew that Lucy and RTL weren’t going to go anywhere, but I wasn’t quite sure if Wyatt was THE ONE since he was still hung up on his deceased wife. Note: I’m trying not to give huge spoilers, but you learn some of this early so this isn’t ruining anything. But then, he helps buckle her into her seat…and OMG, that was it! I am now shipping Lucy and Wyatt to the max! (#Lyatt or #Wucy) It doesn’t hurt that Matt Lanter is a cutie and quite easy to look at!
They share looks, they share touches, he calls her ma’am affectionately! But you know what, you are LEARNING while you get your touch of romance!! I’ve always thought that I had a slightly higher normal knowledge of history than most Americans my age, because it was an interest my sister and I shared, especially in terms of military history. But I’ve learned things I didn’t know-that Lincoln wasn’t the only person targeted that night, that Ian Fleming was a real British spy during WWII, and that H.H. Holmes was America’s first serial killer! (And I’m a murderino-that was inexcusable on my part…) Yeah, not all of history is great but there is always something we can learn and try not to repeat.
In addition, the show has one of the most diverse casts on TV today and even features a POC ‘ship between Rufus and Jiya (#Riya) that is just as much of a part of the show as #Lyatt, and they are both sci-fi nerds! (Star Wars vs Star Trek!) There is literally something for everyone in this show, and is perfect for family which is the main reason why the time slot it is in is a killer and why I’m writing this.
The first thing you have to know is that NBC *cancelled* Timeless last May (right before my birthday, grr) but after a huge outpouring of love from the fans, they agreed to renew it for S2, but only 10 episodes. This is the second show I’ve been a fan of that something similar happened; back in 2007, I was part of the NUTS campaign that brought ‘Jericho’ back for a shortened S2, but the ratings weren’t great and that was the end. In order to bring Timeless back for a S3, we need higher ratings! Problem is that NBC stuck it in a totally crap time slot (Sunday at 10pm) which is completely wrong for a family show. Kids go back to school and most parents return to work Monday mornings so they can’t stay up until 11pm.
So what can YOU do? First, WATCH! Watch it on Hulu, On Demand, on the NBC app or on your DVR. DO NOT skip commercials if watching on your DVR. (You know Big Brother sees everything, and ads mean revenue for companies so a willingness to support shows.) Whichever of the non-live methods you choose, PLEASE do so between Monday and Wednesday as the Live+3 ratings are really important for shows in a late time slot. I have no life, so I’ve managed to watch each of the first 2 episodes 6 times each using each of the different platforms available. 🙂
If you like it, TELL people! Ask them to watch. If you are on Twitter, tweet throughout the week using the #Timeless hashtag. Swap it out for #Clockblockers sometimes! I will admit that’s hard for me, because I’m not a good tweeter-I’m the fogey trying to figure out the proper use of the new-fangled technology! But I’ve done it, AND gotten responses or likes from some of the actors!
My challenge to you is check out tonight’s episode because it is going to be a shipper’s dream! If you don’t like it, you’re only out an hour-it’s less time then you’d spend reading a bad book, and you might learn something. But if you do, spread the word and tell everyone you are #Clockblocker!
Here are some pics from last year’s Comic-Con where I was lucky enough to see the panel!
